UNIT 8 – Accreditation: How to Ensure Quality?

Summary

In this video Marc Lazarovici discusses the accreditation process for simulation centers by the Society for Simulation in Europe (SeSAM). The program was developed by a group of enthusiasts over 3 years, with the first centers accredited in 2018.

The SESAM accreditation is based on two sets of principles – core values and scope. The five core values are promoting patient safety, robust educational principles, high-quality learning opportunities, ensuring psychological safety, and professionalism. The scope relates to application aspects like course design, teaching methods, debriefing, management, and research.

The key aspect is that there are different acceptable ways to meet the principles, not a one-size-fits-all approach. The accreditation process involves document review and a site visit for observation and discussion with staff and learners. The focus is on understanding the rationale behind a center’s approaches within their context.

The video provides examples and explanations for addressing each core principle in the accreditation documents. It emphasizes being specific to the center’s practices rather than making general statements. The process aims to promote reflection on the center’s norms, values and approaches.
